Flashback to 1989, and you'll recall the Mazda debuted the very first Miata under the lights of the Chicago Auto Show. Because of that, Mazda has had a tendency to debut many a special edition Miata at the Chicago expo, and this year will be no different.
Limited to just 450 units here in the Untied States, the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Special Edition takes the top-trim Grand Touring model a step further with a new black-only power retractable hard top - the first time a non-body colored hard top has been available - as well as new 17-inch gunmetal wheels, black exterior accents, black heated leather seats and piano black interior trim. Two new exterior colors - a special white and red - will be offered, and the car can be had with either the six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
Mazda makes no mention of powertrain upgrades for the MX-5 Special Edition, but the normally optional Premium and Suspension packages will come as standard equipment. This means buyers will be treated to goods like Bluetooth, Sirius satellite radio, Bilstein shocks and a sport-tuned suspension. Pricing and detailed specs will be released as part of next week's Chicago festivities, but for now, follow the jump for Mazda's initial press release.Continue reading Mazda bringing special edition MX-5 Miata to Chicago

Volkswagen has released details on its upcoming 2013 Beetle TDI before the vehicle gets an official unveil at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. The oil-burning Beetle will bow with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel engine found in the Jetta TDI and Passat TDI, and Volkswagen projects the engine should help it net 39 miles per gallon highway and 29 mpg city.
Those numbers aren't quite as lofty as we'd expect, especially given how well our long-term Jetta TDI has performed with the same engine under the hood. While we're still waiting on Environmental Protection Agency numbers, our guess is real-world drivers will see significantly better performance out of the latest diesel Bug, which marks its return after being absent since 2006.
With 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, the Beetle TDI shouldn't be a slouch to drive, either. Buyers may choose either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch gearbox. Otherwise, the Beetle TDI remains aesthetically similar to its gasoline counterparts. Expect to see it hit the market in mid-2012 as a 2013 model. In the meantime, stay tuned for our Chicago Auto Show coverage and hit the jump for the full press release.Continue reading 2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI revealed ahead of Chicago Auto Show

Things are shaping up nicely for next week's Chicago Auto Show, key among them this new Kia concept called Track'ster. Riffing on the Korean automaker's hit Soul compact, the Track'ster keeps much of the small car's boxy style, but turns the wick up considerably by scrubbing the rear doors, fitting a gaping front end, substituting massive showcar wheels and dramatically lowering the right height.
This isn't the first time Kia has toyed with the idea of a Soul spinoff - at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, it presented the Soul'ster, a rough-and-tumble concept vehicle with a small pickup bed. Thanks to a strong response from the public, the Soul'ster was understood to be under consideration for production, but its hopes reportedly fizzled due to the economic meltdown.
Despite being on the market since 2008, the Soul continues to pick up momentum in chunks. Thanks in part to a refresh for 2012 that addresses hopes for more powerful drivetrains, the Soul has emerged as one of Kia's best sellers - last month, it was only slightly outdistanced by the Optima midsize sedan, and it's outpacing Sorrento, which was Kia's best-seller last year.
Will Kia finally pull the trigger on a Soul variant? We should know more after the Track'ster makes the show circuit rounds.Kia renders Track'ster concept for Chicago originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Feb 2012 09:58:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Ram is set to introduce a new top-of-the-line pickup at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show next month. The Ram Laramie Limited treats buyers to all the niceties we've come to expect from the so-called "ultrapremium" truck segment. Leather seats with contrasting piping, piano-black trim, LED ambient lighting and unique gauges are all part of the package, as are deep berber carpet floor mats. Look for the Ram Laramie Limited to bow with navigation, remote start, a backup camera, power adjustable pedals, along with heated steering wheel and seats. Even rear passengers will stay toasty thanks to seat heaters of their very own.
Chrysler says the Ram Laramie Limited is a more understated alternative to the brash Laramie Longhorn. As such, the newest line addition comes packing somewhat more conservative exterior badges. That means the usual Hemi, Cummins and Ram hardware has been scrapped. Ram hasn't completely turned its back on bling, however. The new Laramie Limited rides on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. The vehicle will be available in 1500, 2500 HD and 3500 HD configurations when in launches in the second quarter of 2012. Hit the jump for the full press release.Continue reading Ram piles on the trimmings with new Laramie Limited for Chicago

Volkswagen has confirmed to Autoblog that the oil-burning 2013 Beetle TDI will make its public debut at the Chicago Auto Show next month.
No specific details have been released at this time, but you can bet that the automaker's slick 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four will be underhood. In the Golf, Jetta and Passat, the mill kicks out 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, and both six-speed manual and DSG transmissions will likely be available. This engine is already good for as high as 43 miles per gallon highway in the Passat (and we've routinely hit as high as 50 mpg in our long-term Jetta TDI), so we expect exceptional fuel economy out of the diesel Bug, as well.
What's more, our understanding is that Volkswagen plans to offer the TDI engine in the upcoming Beetle Convertible, which will make it the very first clean diesel droptop available in the United States. Of course, we won't know for sure until the roofless Bug debuts later this year, but still, it's something to get excited about (if ragtop Beetles are your thing, anyway).
Stay tuned for the full scoop live from the Chicago show next month.2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI to debut at Chicago Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 19:40:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

We can't tell you how many times we've each been asked about concept cars, "Why can't I buy one of those?" Well you can. Not often, mind you, and not cheaply. But every once in a while, one of those glitzy concepts you see on a show stand comes up for sale. And now, it's time to grab your checkbooks.
The show car (or truck, to be precise) you see here was the centerpiece of the Ford display at the 2001 Chicago Auto Show. Dubbed the F-150 Lightning Rod, it takes the formula employed by the SVT Lightning to a more stylized extent, with a chopped roofline and raked windshield, flush-fitted neon head- and tail-lights, and a minimalist interior. The whole package is finished in metallic red with a tribal tattoo motif. A 5.4-liter SOHC V8 sat under the hood, mated to a four-speed automatic. The 21-inch aluminum wheels wear tires whose tread is cut to match the tattoo pattern.
This unique concept truck is expected to fetch around $50,000 when it crosses the block at the RM Auctions event in Arizona next week, but while it's in proper running condition, it isn't certified to drive on public streets. Check it out the listing after the jump and browse the attached photo gallery.Continue reading 2001 Ford F-150 Lightning Rod Concept up for grabs at RM Auctions

The Chicago Auto Show has always sort of been known as a truck show, and because of that, many new pickups, SUVs and crossovers tend to debut in the Windy City. That in mind, it comes as no surprise to learn that General Motors plans to debut an all-new version of the GMC Acadia in Chicago next month. The Acadia, which launched in 2006 as a 2007 model, is indeed due for an overhaul, with its only major update being the addition of a Denali model (pictured) in 2011.
If you recall, the Acadia was the first of the Lambda crossovers to go on sale, alongside the now-departed Saturn Outlook. When asked about the possibility of a new Chevrolet Traverse or Buick Enclave making an appearance in Chicago, GMC Communications Manager Joe LaMuraglia stated that it "will be a GMC show," leading us to believe that we'll have to wait until New York or even Los Angeles to see the rest of the Lambda portfolio.
No specific details about the new Acadia were revealed at this time, nor was there any hint as to whether we'll see just the standard CUV or whether it will be joined by a Denali version. Stay tuned for the full details next month.
UPDATE: A source confirmed to Autoblog that GMC will debut a mid-cycle update of the Acadia at the Chicago Auto Show next month, not an all-new design. Expect an updated interior design and exterior tweaks. Next GMC Acadia to debut at Chicago Auto Show [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 15:58:00 EST. The Dubai Autodrome will play host to a very special guest for the 2012 Dunlop 24 Hours of Dubai race.
In addition to the scads of GT3-spec BMW Z4s, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMGs, Ferrari 458 Italias and Porsche 911s, the pace car running in front of them will be none other than the Nissan Juke R.
The 480-horsepower GT-R/Juke mash-up hasn't made its debut in front of the public yet, so unless Nissan has a surprise up its sleeves before the race, which is scheduled for the weekend of January 12-14, this will be Juke R's coming out party. We won't be on hand to snag shots of the R in Dubai, but rumor has it that it could make its first Stateside appearance at the Chicago Auto Show.Nissan Juke R to pace Dubai 24-hour race originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Dec 2011 19:00:00 EST. Hyundai has just confirmed that a two-door coupe version of the Elantra is coming, but despite prior speculation pegging its debut at next week's LA Auto Show, the Korean automaker will be waiting until next February at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show to do the reveal.
We've seen the car, and the Elantra Coupe looks much like your regular four-door Elantra but with two less ports of entry and a much more sporting flair. Hyundai hopes to differentiate the coupe from the sedan by giving it a different set of gear ratios for a more sporting driving experience. The Elantra Coupe will also get its own unique SE trim level, which as we know based on Hyundai's traditional trim designations, is the sporty trim. The company expects the coupe to make up 20 percent of the Elantra's volume, and its obvious target is the Honda Civic Coupe, as well as the Kia Forte Koup that will share the same basic underpinnings.
In other Elantra news, Hyundai has also confirmed that a new five-door Elantra, heretofore called the Elantra Touring, will arrive in 2013. We've already seen this model; it's called the i30 in Europe where it's already debuted. The new five-door hatchback will not, however, retain the Elantra Touring name. Hyundai is keeping the new name close to its chest, but did tell us that the car will be called "Elantra something."Hyundai Elantra Coupe confirmed, coming to Chicago originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Nov 2011 10:45:00 EST. Three men have been arrested in connection with $30,000 worth of vandalism to Toyota vehicles at this year's Chicago Auto Show. According to the Chicago Sun Times, Bryan Kjellman (bottom right), Richard Data (top right) and Edmund Grzeszkiewicz (left), aged 22, 20 and 27 respectively, were taken into custody by show security for using razor blades and screwdrivers to damage the interiors of seven of vehicles. When questioned by authorities, the trio said that they were angry at Toyota the company's role in taking U.S. jobs overseas.
They must have missed the memo about Toyota operating nine manufacturing facilities in the States with over 28,000 employees. All told, of the seven vehicles that Kjellman, Data and Grzeszkiewicz damaged, three were built right here in the Land of the Free. The casualties included a Camry, a Rav4, a Land Cruiser, a Prius and two Tundra models in addition to a Lexus ES350.
The damage ranged from slashed seat cushions and dashboards to broken doorhandles and turning indicator stalks. The trio even set about scratching the windshields of certain vehicles. At the last report, the vandals were set to appear in bond court on February 18, and each have been charged with one felony count each of criminal damage to property. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque - Click above for high-res image gallery
The Range Rover Evoque will be priced somewhere around $45,000. That would be about $8,500 more expensive than a Land Rover LR2 and about $3,500 less expensive than an LR4. But the Evoque's full name is technically the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and it wears a Land Rover badge on its rear valance - whereas brands like Toyota, Honda and Nissan don't put their badges on their respective luxury lines. With this initial overlap in price, and Range Rover possibly going even lower with a sub-Evoque Mini rival, we asked Land Rover if it was working to get any more separation with its Range Rover brand.
"Dealers will add Range Rover branding to their towers," said Skip Pavlik, Land Rover product manager, referring to the signage outside dealerships that will indicate three brands now - Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover, instead of just Jaguar and Land Rover. Pavlick also said that "the issue is in flux right now."
"Land Rover is more utilitarian, Range Rover is the top end of luxury," said Wayne Kung, Jaguar-Land Rover's manager of national product communications. "You don't lose any capability with the Range Rover, but the Evoque especially is about unabashed on-road and urban driving."
It was Pavlik who pointed out that "the Evoque started off as a Land Rover concept, the LRX, and it still has a Land Rover badge." When we asked if that badge would be there in three years, neither Pavlik nor Kung could say. The price issue, however - Range Rovers that are inexpensive, by comparison, to Land Rovers - isn't seen as posing any problems for the Land Rover line. "Price is secondary," said Pavlik. Added Kung, "They're different customers."

The Chicago Auto Show may be the smallest of the major North American auto shows, but this year proved to be surprisingly bountiful in terms of the number of new cars that were revealed. Sure, many of these new products were merely trim level upgrades, but we saw quite a few big introductions that sparked lengthy discussions amongst the Autoblog staff.
Thus, we've looked through the lot of Autoblog's show coverage and the staffers on-hand in Chicago have picked their favorite vehicles that debuted in the Windy City. Much like our Detroit Auto Show picks, our editors had no problem picking our first and second place winners, but when it came to numbers three, four and five, that's when the arguing began.
Still, we've come to a final consensus, and you can read our Top Five Editors' Choice debuts after the jump.Continue reading 2011 Chicago Auto Show: Editors' Choice for Top Five Vehicles

Kia Optima Turbo SX Kinetic Race Car - Click above for high-res image gallery
Is Kia considering following the lead set by Toyota in crafting an entry into NASCAR? No - at least not that we know of. But the Korean automaker is proving it has an interest in racing nonetheless, as you can see from the 2011 Kia Optima Turbo SX built by Kinetic Motorsports seen above.
According to Kia, this race car was built as a prototype to showcase the performance and racing capabilites of the Optima. Performance aside, this machine, which is being shown off at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show, certainly looks the part of a credible racer.
It's worth noting that the Kia Forte race car, also built by Kia racing partner Kinetic, finished second in the Grand-Am race at Daytona a few weeks ago. Will the Optima be following suit? It certainly wouldn't be a complete surprise...
